The The Daily Cafe is a literacy structure used in the classroom to allow students opportunities to develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently. The reading CAFE strategies taught in the classroom motivate children to read and create a love for reading! During the Daily Five, there are five essential skills for becoming a great independent reader and writer.
1. Everyday, the children will Read to Self. The students will learn the three ways to read a book, look at the pictures, read the words, and retell the story. Using this strategy will help the students choose good fit books. Good fit books are books with a majority of words the child can read or have pictures that the child can follow along with as well as having a topic that interests the child.

A letter will be sent home with your child's Big Universe account. Please have your child practice logging into this account at home because we will be using them during small reading groups and during Read to Self. Also, your child may read books at home using Big Universe and read books recommended by me. If you have any questions, please contact me via e-mail or a note.
2. Another choice will be to Read to Someone. The children will take turns reading a good fit book to one another and asking each other questions about the book afterwards. This promotes terrific listening skills and ability to work with a partner.
3. Listening to Reading is another choice which, allows the children to listen to a story on the ipod, computer, or laptop and follow along with the book. This allows the children to hear a fluent reader use expression and enthusiasm while reading. Please see "Useful Links" for some websites we use in the classroom.
4. Word Work is a wonderful Daily Five center that allows children to work with a variety of letters and words with activities modified for each child's literacy skill and areas of need.
5. Students will also Work on Writing. Students may choose from a variety of writing methods such as, journal writing, letter writing, recipe writing, list writing, writing a response to a writing prompt, etc. Students apply strategies from word work to spell words using their letter sounds and use their creativity in each writing entry. During Work on Writing time, students also work together to read each other's work and edit their writing to make it fabulous!
To help your child build reading stamina, please read every day for twenty minutes! Also add writing into the mix by having your child keep a journal or have them write cards to family members!
